Situated on a the hills and shore of Lake Kivu this is easily the most scenic town of DR Congo. You will find old colonial buildings near the lake side from its Belgian colonial past. It is a great escape from Goma which is situated on the northern tip of the lake. Easily accessible by boat from Goma or by road via de Cyangugu border with Rwanda.
The Catholic Cathedral in the town centre is the main attraction. Also worth a visit is the Centra de Rehabilitation des Primates in the neighboring town of Lwiro. This primate sanctuary is also a research centre built by the Belgians.
