Lodges and hotels in Uganda

Matoke Tours stands out for over 10 years in its accommodation concept: We visit all accommodation in Uganda ourselves to be able to select the best accommodation for you and to give you advice from personal experience!

Our selection criteria are focused on the view, service, location, style and price of each lodge. We give options in different standards and budgets.

On this page you will find our selection of the best hotels and lodges Uganda has to offer.

We also have a selection of preferred accommodation in Rwanda, Tanzania, DR Congo and Tropical islands

How We Rate Accomodation

“Budget” - Accommodation such as simple guesthouses or dormitory rooms are available throughout Uganda. Service and amenity standards won't be high and you are likely to share facilities with other guests, but choosing this standard can make a big difference in the price of the tour. Alternatively, you can choose to camp. Some campsites have wonderful locations and Matoke Tours can provide you with tents and mattresses.

“Mid-range” - Matoke Tours originally focused mainly on the mid-range market and therefore has a special ability to choose the best accommodation of this standard. This is your best option for comfortable, self-contained ('en suite') accommodation set in stunning locations that don't cost a fortune.

“Semi-luxe” - Accommodation falling in this category is more comfortable than the mid-range. The locations are similar, but the details are further refined. These lodges often have a swimming pool, as well.

“High-end” - The luxurious accommodation is fully equipped, comfortable and usually more spacious than the mid-range options. They often have facilities like swimming pools, masseurs and sometimes even private butlers.

Nile River Camp is also home to Nalubale Rafting which offers all the rafting options on the Nile at a substantially discounted price for the Full Day Grade 5 trips.

Mbale

Mbale Resort (Semi-luxe)

Not many people stay in Mbale and we normally advise people to stay in Sipi Falls instead. However, Sipi falls doesn't have many semi-luxe options. Only Sipi River Lodge offers semi-luxe accommodation, but has only 3 self-contained rooms. When it's full or when we have bigger groups we sometimes choose to stay in Mbale and do the Sipi Falls activities from here (1 hour driving each way).

Mbale Resort Hotel presents itself as a deluxe five star hotel, but Matoke Tours doesn't see it this way. However, they do offer comfortable accommodation and the service and swimming pool are nice, so we rate it as Semi-luxe.

Sipi Falls

Sipi River Lodge (Semi-luxe)

Sipi River Lodge is by far the most comfortable place to stay in Sipi Falls. Sipi River Lodge is wonderfully set amongst the Kapsurur Falls (the second of the three Sipi waterfalls), several caves and peaceful gardens to explore.

The Lodge is run with only a small number of guests at any time making it a very 'home away from home' experience. The food is among the best in Uganda and the fire place makes the cozy restaurant warm during the cold nights.

The 3 spacious cottages are self contained. They as well have some wonderful non-self contained bandas, which are more affordable and come with the same service standards. In this case it would be more like a mid-range option

Lacam Lodge (Budget/ mid-range)

Lacam lodge is beautifully located right at the edge of the cliff and has the most amazing views of the valley and the biggest waterfall in this area. The rooms are rather basic but comfortable and bar and view will make up for that.

The Staff is super friendly and very helpful in arranging all things in the park including guides for hiking.

Home of Friends guesthouse (budget/mid-range)

Home of Friends is a convenient mid-range accommodation, just outside Kapchorwa Town, located on the flanks of Mount Elgon (2.000m. altitude). With its panoramic views and leisure opportunities such as hiking and mountain biking, it is a perfect getaway from the hectic city life. The amazing Sipi Falls are located only 20 min. from the Guesthouse. In its cosy restaurant, Home of Friends offers healthy and affordable meals, a tasty mix of Ugandan and Western food.

Lira

Brownstone Country Home (Mid-range)

The Brownstone provides an easy to reach quiet location for your comfortable stay and is just 5 km (7 minutes’ drive) to Lira Town. It's set in a quiet location for your comfortable stay. The accomodation is situated in vast well laundered undulating compound interspaced with a variety of natural trees and organically nurtured orchards that provide sweet mouth-watering fruits you never forget after staying at Brownstone.

Margherita Palace Hotel (Budget/ mid-range)

One of the best hotels down-town but still quite basic. Offers adequate room with comfortable double bed, mosquito net, wardrobe, desk and chair, fridge, clean ensuite bathroom. On-site restaurant serves basic meals.

Gulu

Churchill Courts (Mid-range)

Gulu is rather new on the tourism map and not yet many nice and cozy lodges have been built. There are plenty of opportunities to stay in comfortable and clean places, but it won't give you the "out of Africa" experience.

One of the most comfortable hotels is Churchill Courts. It's a new hotel with spacious air-conditioned rooms (useful, because Gulu can be very hot). The restaurant isn't all that cozy, but the menu is good and the service is warm and nice, as usual in Uganda.

Bomah Hotel Gulu (Mid-range)

Gulu is rather new on the tourism map and not yet many nice and cozy lodges have been built. There are plenty of opportunities to stay in comfortable and clean places, but it won't give you the "out of Africa" experience.

Bomah Hotel Gulu is one of the oldest hotels in Gulu and famous with volunteers and expats. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the restaurant serves simple, but fine meals and the restaurant/bar is rather cozy. There is a sauna, but this is not very needed as Gulu can be very hot on sunny days. The hotel can be quite noisy when weddings or functions are scheduled and in the weekend a band plays loud music until midnight.

Moroto

Karamoja Safari Camp (Budget/ Mid-range)

Karamoja Safari Camp is located in the beating heart of the Karamoja region at the slopes of the extinct volcano of Mt Moroto. The lodge design is a blend of traditional customs and local materials with a modern touch. An unique experience of heritage, comfort and hospitality during a safari through Uganda’s untouched northeast. With a fully stocked bar and the only place in Karamoja to score a cappuccino or late macchiato.

The accommodation is rather simple, but it's probaply your best pick in Karamoja. The service is great and it's the starting point of most activities in the region.

Kotido (Karamaoja)

Kidepo Valley National Park

Apoka Lodge (High-end)

Apoka Lodge is in a different price range and will not fit in all budgets. It does however offer something unique:

The rooms at Apoka Lodge have been built with comfort in mind. Everything is handmade by local craftsmen, everything is large and capacious. 10 expansive rooms with natural canvas walls surround a rocky kopje with endless views across the savannah.

With inside sitting rooms and private verandas there are plenty of places to relax, read and write letters. Big hand-hewn beds with soft duvets are draped with mosquito nets, hand-woven woolen carpets, extra large plush towels, oversized dressing gowns…you may be as far away from the city as you’ll ever be, but you won’t miss a thing.

There is a swimming pool as well

Kidepo Savannah Lodge (Mid-range)

Being just 500 mt away from Kalokudo gate, the lodge is literally on a stone's throw from the Park, but it feels like being inside the park. The lodge offers stunning views over the Kidepo Plains. It offers  unparalled vistas of the expansive Narus Valley, Mount Morungole and the distant mountain ranges which form the border with Southern Sudan.

The lodge is inspired by the savannah surroundings, the grasslands, rocky outcrops, and ... by the karamajong, the tribe with their typical manyattas and colorful blankets.  The lodge had to blend in rater than stick out.

Nga’Moru Wilderness Camp (Mid-range)

Nga’Moru Wilderness Camp is situated on the border of the Kidepo Valley National Park, only 4 kilometers from the gate. Here you will find comfortable accommodation in either a safari tent under thatch or in a Cabana. All accommodation is en-suite.

Nga’Moru Camp offers a true bush experience in one of the most beautiful game parks in Uganda. The lodge is located on a hill, and the camp offers spectacular views of the Narus Valley and the savannah plains stretching all the way to the Morungole Mountains. Elephant, Hyena, Waterbuck, Zebra and Lion are frequent visitors to the Camp.

UWA Banda's (Budget)

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) provides some basic, but nice bandas in the park. The bandas have recently been renovated and offer simple non self-contained and self-contained accommodation with cold shower. Because the banda's are located in the heart of the parc you have lots of wildlife wandering around your rooms and it's the perfect hideout to start your game drives from. You'd however better bring your own food as food services are rather poor.

Bush Camping in the middle of the park (Budget)

We only recommend camping when the location is adding something extra. This is the case in Kidepo Valley N.P. Bush camping is the most spectacular way of visiting Kidepo Valley N.P. Because the 2 campsites are both located on a hill you have a wonderful view over the park. The campsites are often be visited by wildlife, including lion. There is a ranger with you 24 hours a day to keep you safe.

Matoke Tours can provide tents and mattresses + as well as cooking equipment, as there are no restaurants.
