Day 2 & 3: To Andasibe N.P.

After a good night sleep and a delicious breakfast you will start to drive for about 5hours on the eastern side of the country. There is a possibility of an en-route picnic stop at Peyrieras reserve to sight an extraordinary collection of Chameleons, geckos, bats and frogs. You will later proceed to the Andasibe National Park.

Andasibe is the habitat of the biggest lemur alive known as the Indri-Indri. Your designated guide will walk you deep into the forest so you can catch a glimpse of them. You will be amazed by the impressive sounds made by the Indri Indri while communicating with each other. The Bamboo Lemur, brown lemur and the Parsons Chameleon are also easily sighted in the park.

You can also opt for an evening walk around the forest to spot the nocturnal animals, like the mouse lemur, sportive lemur, chameleons and frogs.

Day 4: Canal de Pangalanes

After a 5 hour journey through the tropical mountain range of East Madagascar, you will bid your designated driver/guide goodbye. A boat will take you through the Canal de Pangalanes to Palmarium Reserve. The Pangalanes is formed by a chain of hundreds of kilometers of lakes, lagoons and creeks. In colonial times this area was used for transporting crops from the south to the harbor of Tamatave, but not anymore as the water is too shallow.

You will be brought to Palmarium or Akanin’ny Nofy which means “Place of dreams”. This says enough! You will spend the night in a bungalow camp overlooking the lake with a small reserve in the backyard, where you can find more lemur species. The lemurs are actually hanging around the lodge all the time providing a perfect opportunity for some great pics.

This morning a guide will take you around the reserve and show you all the different species around. You will have the possibility to see the Indri from very close, but also the cockerel Sifaka an various Brown Lemurs.

After the walk and an early lunch you will board the boat to the big Port Tamatave. During the trip you will be able to see local life around the calans and lakes that used to form a transport route in French colonial times.

You will send the night in a good hotel near the airport of Tamatave.

Day 6: St Marie, the Island of the Whales and Pirates

This early morning you will board a small airplane for a 20 minute flight to St Marie, locally called Nosy Boraha. You will stay at a great lodge with bungalows on the beach and sea view. From your porch you can regularly see the Humpback whales proudly jumping into the air displaying their fins. For the coming 3 nights you will stay at Libertalia.

Day 7: St Marie - Whales

On day 7 you will head out for an exciting ride on a speedboat far from the coast to be able to see the humpback whales close by. Make sure you are prepared to get wet and if sea sickness is common to you take your medication before boarding the boat.

The humpback whales come all the way from Antarctica to give birth and escape from the cold winter. That is why Madagascar is a great location to sight them as they are relaxed, playful and they are stationary in one location for a few months.

Day 8: St Marie - Relax

Today you have a full day to relax at the pool, read a book, or visit the nearby cemetery of the pirates that used to live here. But you can also visit the neighbouring Ile aux Nattes, an Island without cars, just local villages, some lemurs and beautiful beaches.

Day 9: Back to Antananarivo

Today you will return to the capital by plane. You will have another day here to by some souvenirs, try one of the fancy restaurants around town or to visit the capital or the royal hill. The hotel will be happy to help you with an excursion of your choice.
